Feather Renewal Blend & Molting FAQ

Brewing Instructions

Our Flockfolk Feather Renewal teas are designed for simplicity and effectiveness. Follow these easy steps to prepare a delicious and supportive brew for your flock:

(1) Prepare: Place one (1) tea bag from any of your Feather Renewal blends into a clean, heat-safe container (e.g., a Mason jar or ceramic bowl).

(2) Steep: Pour 2 to 4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea bag. Cover and let steep for 15–20 minutes, or until cooled to room temperature.

(3) Dilute: Pour the cooled, concentrated tea into a clean 1-gallon chicken waterer.

(4) Fill: Top off the waterer with fresh, cool water to the 1-gallon mark.

(5) Feed Mash Option: Tea may also be used to moisten feed, creating a nutritious mash. This method delivers herbs more directly, avoids birds refusing water due to flavor changes, and works especially well when targeting extra support (e.g., during molt). Offer only what your flock will finish in one sitting to prevent spoilage.

✔ Always provide a second plain waterer alongside.
❌ Discard any unused tea after 24 hours.

How to Use Flockfolk Tea as a Mash

In addition to serving teas in a waterer, you can also make a nutritious mash. This is a great option if your flock doesn’t like flavored water or if you want a more targeted way to deliver the herbs.

(1) Brew: Steep the tea bag in freshly boiled water for 15–20 minutes. Let it cool completely before using.

(2) Mix: Pour the cooled tea over your chickens’ feed, adding just enough to moisten and create a soft mash. The texture should be damp and crumbly — not soupy.

(3) Serve Fresh: Offer the mash right away and only make as much as your flock will finish in one sitting. Toss any leftovers after 24 hours. Always keep plain, fresh water available alongside the mash.

Understanding Herbal Rotation: Feather Renewal System

The true strength of this collection lies in the practice of rotation. Just like a varied diet keeps us healthier, rotating different herbal blends gives your flock a broader spectrum of supportive nutrients.

This balanced approach keeps their systems responsive, prevents over-dependence on any one herb, and ensures your birds receive steady, comprehensive wellness support throughout the molting process. It’s a simple rhythm with powerful results — helping your flock look and feel their best, naturally.

Why is Repair & Restore Limited to Once Per Week?

Repair & Restore is a targeted, potent blend formulated for deep recovery during the most demanding phases of molt or after significant stress. Herbs like horsetail and burdock root provide concentrated silica, minerals, and gentle detox support—but when used too often, these stronger herbs may place unnecessary strain on the system. Offering it just once per week ensures your flock gets the restorative benefits without overloading their bodies, while the other blends (Feather Fuel and Smooth Molt) provide steady daily support.

What Is Molting, and Why Is It So Important ?

Molting is a natural cycle where chickens shed their old feathers and grow new ones. Most flocks go through a full molt once a year—usually in the fall—though lighter molts can happen at other times. Because feathers are made mostly of protein, this process places a big nutritional demand on your birds.

During a molt, your chickens may look a little rough around the edges, with bare patches and fewer feathers, and you’ll likely notice their egg production slowing down or even pausing altogether. This is normal! Their bodies are simply redirecting energy toward feather regrowth.

Our Feather Renewal Blend Pack was specially created to support chickens through this challenging season by providing targeted herbs that promote feather health, resilience, and overall well-being.

How Long Does Molting Last?

The length of a molt can vary quite a bit depending on the chicken’s age, health, and breed. A light or partial molt may last only a few weeks, while a heavy, full molt often stretches 8–16 weeks (about 2–4 months).

No matter how long it takes, the molting process is demanding. Our Feather Renewal Blend Pack is designed to provide steady, gentle support throughout the entire period, helping your flock stay comfortable and resilient until their feathers are fully renewed.

How Often Do Chickens Molt?

Most chickens go through a major molt once per year, typically in the late summer or fall as daylight hours shorten. Younger pullets and cockerels usually won’t experience a full molt until they are around 12–18 months old, though they may go through smaller “mini-molts” as their juvenile feathers are replaced.

Light or partial molts can also happen at other times due to stress, seasonal changes, or disruptions such as predator scares, illness, or rehoming.

Each bird is unique, but you can generally expect at least one significant molt annually.

What Should I Expect When My Chickens Molt?

Molting is a completely natural part of a chicken’s life cycle, but it can look a little alarming if you’ve never seen it before. Here’s what to expect and how to support your flock:

🌿 What Happens During a Molt

Chickens shed old, worn feathers and grow in fresh new plumage.

You may notice bare patches, scruffy or ragged appearances, and lots of feathers scattered around the coop and yard.

Egg production usually slows down or stops altogether — this is normal, since their bodies redirect nutrients toward feather growth instead of laying.

💡 How Molting Affects Your Birds

Feather regrowth requires significant protein, minerals, and energy, so your chickens may seem tired or less active.

Some hens become moody or withdrawn — they may avoid handling, as new “pin feathers” are sensitive and can be uncomfortable when touched.

Stress is common, as nutrient demands increase and weather changes often coincide with molt (especially in fall).

What You Can Do to Help

Boost Nutrition: Provide a balanced diet with extra protein and mineral support to aid feather regrowth. Herbal teas like our Feather Renewal Blends give gentle, rotating support for skin comfort, circulation, and overall resilience.

Offer Calm & Space: Avoid excessive handling during molt — pin feathers are tender, and your hens may appreciate some space.

Keep Them Comfortable: Ensure draft-free, dry housing, with clean bedding and plenty of roosting space.

Fresh Water Daily: Always offer plain, fresh water alongside any supplements or teas.

What Not to Do

Don’t push your hens to keep laying with artificial lighting or high-carb “treat diets.” Their bodies need rest and recovery.

Avoid unnecessary stressors like moving coops, mixing new flock members, or handling excessively during this time.

✨ With patience and the right support, your flock will emerge from molt looking refreshed, with strong, healthy feathers and renewed vitality.

Can Non-molting Birds Drink These Teas?

Yes, absolutely! While the Feather Renewal Blend Pack is specially formulated for molting support, the herbs are gentle, nutritive, and safe for any member of your flock—hens, roosters, or pullets 10+ weeks old. They provide overall vitality, skin comfort, and mineral support year-round. The built-in rotation ensures your birds receive a varied spectrum of benefits, even outside of a molt.

Can I Combine This With the Summer or Winter Wellness Collections?

Yes! The Feather Renewal Blend Pack can be used alongside the Summer or Winter Wellness Collections. During active molting season, the Feather Renewal blends provide targeted feather and skin support, while the seasonal collections focus on climate-specific needs (hydration and cooling in summer, circulation and immune support in winter).

For best results, offer one system at a time in rotation—using Feather Renewal as your primary support during molt, and layering in the Summer or Winter teas for general wellness outside of heavy molts. This way your flock benefits from comprehensive, well-rounded care without overusing any one type of herb.
