Summer Wellness Blends FAQ

Brewing Instructions

Our Flockfolk Summer Wellness teas are designed to keep things simple, refreshing, and effective for warm-weather care. Here’s how to prepare a safe, supportive brew for your flock:

(1) Prepare
Place one (1) tea bag from any of your Summer Wellness blends (Sunny Sips, GreenGlow Chill, or Coop Breeze) into a clean, heat-safe container (e.g., a Mason jar or ceramic bowl).

(2) Steep
Pour 2 to 4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea bag. Cover and let steep for 15–20 minutes, or until cooled to room temperature.
💡 Pro Tip: For a stronger brew, steep up to 30 minutes — just be sure it cools fully before serving.

(3) Dilute
Pour the cooled, concentrated tea into a clean 1-gallon chicken waterer.

(4) Fill
Top off the waterer with fresh, cool water to the 1-gallon mark.

(5) Feed Mash Option
Tea may also be used to moisten feed, creating a light, refreshing mash. This method is helpful if your flock is hesitant about flavored water or if you want to deliver herbs more directly. Add just enough tea to create a crumbly, damp texture — never soupy. Offer only what your flock will finish in one sitting to prevent spoilage.

✔ Always provide a second plain waterer alongside.
❌ Discard any unused tea after 24 hours.

How To Use Flockfolk Tea as a Mash

In addition to serving teas in a waterer, you can also make a nutritious mash. This is a great option if your flock doesn’t like flavored water or if you want a more targeted way to deliver the herbs.

(1) Brew: Steep the tea bag in freshly boiled water for 15–20 minutes. Let it cool completely before using.

(2) Mix: Pour the cooled tea over your chickens’ feed, adding just enough to moisten and create a soft mash. The texture should be damp and crumbly — not soupy.

(3) Serve Fresh: Offer the mash right away and only make as much as your flock will finish in one sitting. Toss any leftovers after 24 hours. Always keep plain, fresh water available alongside the mash.

How to Serve Your Flock for Optimal Results

Offer Choices
Always provide a second waterer with plain, fresh water so your flock has continuous access to pure hydration, especially in hot weather.

Serve Fresh Daily
Prepare a new batch each day and discard any unused tea after 24 hours to maintain freshness.

Keep it Clean
Wash and refresh waterers thoroughly between uses to prevent build-up and ensure safe hydration.

Rotation & Frequency
Offer these gentle, nutritive teas 4–5 times per week, rotating between the three blends: Sunny Sips, GreenGlow Chill, and Coop Breeze.

Why It Matters
This consistent, varied approach supports steady hydration and helps keep your flock comfortable and balanced throughout the warm season.

Summer Wellness Rotation Sample Schedule

Sunny Sips → 2× per week (gentle hydration & calm)

GreenGlow Chill → 2× per week (minerals + cooling balance)

Coop Breeze Balance → 1–2× per week (immune + respiratory comfort, hot days)

Plain Water → Daily ( so your flock has access to pure hydration at all times)

👉 Offer each brew in a 1‑gallon waterer alongside plain water so your flock can choose.

Repeat weekly during warm weather and heat season.

🥣 Mash Option (or Use Both)

Instead of (or alongside) flavored water, pour cooled tea over feed to create a soft mash. This provides a targeted way to deliver herbs and works well if birds are hesitant with flavored water. Offer only what they’ll finish in one sitting and discard any leftovers within 24 hours.

Complimentary Care Suggestions

Provide Shade
Always make sure your flock has access to shaded areas throughout the day. A tarp, trees, or a simple lean-to can dramatically reduce heat stress.

Fresh, Cool Water
Refill waterers often in hot weather since chickens drink more in summer. Adding frozen water bottles or ice packs can help keep water cooler for longer. Offer both tea and plain water side by side so birds can choose what they need.

Hydrating Treats
Water-rich snacks like cucumber, watermelon, or leafy greens make great summer treats. Offer in moderation — they add hydration and enrichment without weighing birds down.

Airflow Matters
Good ventilation in the coop is essential. Open vents or windows (covered with predator-proof wire) to let hot air escape and fresh air circulate.

Frozen Enrichment
Create frozen “flock pops” by freezing herbs, fruit, or veggies in ice blocks. They’re fun, cooling, and encourage steady water intake.

What Are the Benefits of Using Herbal Teas For Chickens in Warm Weather?

Even healthy chickens can feel the strain of summer heat, and hydration becomes one of the most important parts of daily care. That’s why our Summer Wellness Blends are thoughtfully crafted to keep water appealing, encourage steady drinking, and provide gentle, seasonal support when temperatures rise.

Cooling herbs like peppermint and spearmint refresh naturally, helping your flock beat the heat, while mineral-rich greens offer light nourishment to support balance and vitality. Soothing herbs add digestive comfort, making each sip both hydrating and beneficial.

By rotating these blends through the week, you not only keep water interesting and palatable, but you also provide varied herbal support that aligns with your flock’s natural needs during hot weather. Paired with fresh, plain water, shade, and good airflow, these blends help chickens stay comfortable, resilient, and thriving all summer long.

Can These Blends Help With Heat Stress?

Our Summer Wellness Blends provide gentle herbal support to encourage hydration and seasonal comfort, but they are not a cure or treatment for heat stress.

Always pair them with sound flock management:

Fresh, cool water available at all times.

Ample shade throughout the day.

Good airflow and ventilation in the coop and run.

Extras in extreme heat — frozen treats, ice bottles in waterers, or misters to help reduce risk.

Chickens naturally cool themselves by panting and open-mouth breathing on hot days, so seeing this behavior alone is not a cause for alarm.

What’s concerning is when these signs are severe or prolonged, or when they appear alongside other symptoms, such as:

Lethargy that doesn’t resolve quickly

Drooping wings

Unsteady or staggering movement

Collapse or inability to rise

⚠️ If you see these advanced signs, seek veterinary care promptly.

The blends are meant to be a gentle, supportive part of your summer routine — keeping water appealing and encouraging steady hydration — but the essentials of husbandry are always your flock’s strongest protection in hot weather.

Can I Use These Blends Year-Round, or Only In Summer?

While the Summer Wellness Blends are designed with warm weather in mind, their gentle, nutritive herbs (like Lemon Balm, Rosehips, and Nettle) can be enjoyed by your flock any time of year as part of a varied routine. For colder months, you may prefer our Winter Wellness blends, which are tailored to seasonal challenges like confinement and cold snaps. We recommend rotating collections by season to keep your flock’s hydration routine fresh and balanced.

I Live In a Consistently Hot Climate, How Should I Use Your Summer Wellness Support Blends?

In regions where warm weather lasts most of the year, the Summer Wellness Blends can be your flock’s go-to rotation.

Offer them 4–5 days per week, always alongside plain, fresh water so your birds can choose.

If you experience only mild cool seasons, you may not need the Winter Wellness blends. However, if your climate does bring sudden cold snaps or damp, chilly stretches, the Winter Wellness blends are specially tailored for those conditions.

Many keepers in warm climates simply use Summer Wellness year-round, then switch to Winter blends only if seasonal weather changes call for it.

My Chickens Aren't Drinking as Much in the Heat. Will These Teas Help?

Many chicken keepers find that the pleasant aroma and light flavor of herbal teas can make water more appealing, which may encourage birds to drink a bit more during hot weather.

Staying hydrated is especially important in the heat, so offering teas alongside plain, fresh water gives your flock both variety and choice.

You can also use brewed tea to moisten feed into a nutritious mash.

This option delivers herbs more directly, and it works especially well for flocks that are hesitant about flavored water. Just offer what they’ll finish in one sitting and discard leftovers within 24 hours.

Does the Summer Wellness Blend Replace Heat-Management Practices?

No. They’re a gentle addition to good husbandry. Prioritize shade, airflow, cool water, and other cooling measures during heat.

Can I Use the Summer Wellness Blends With Chicks or Only Adult Birds?

The Summer Wellness Blends are gentle enough for flocks that include both adults and chicks, but it’s important to introduce them thoughtfully.

Very young chicks (0–2 weeks): Stick with plain fresh water (with electrolytes if shipped or stressed). At this age, hydration and simple nutrition from starter feed are all they need.

Older chicks (2–6 weeks): You can begin offering Summer Wellness at half strength, but always keep a plain waterer alongside so they can choose. This way, curious chicks can sip without replacing essential hydration.

Fully feathered (6–8 weeks): Once chicks are sturdy, active, and integrated with the main flock, you can rotate Summer Wellness blends at normal strength alongside adult birds.

👉 If your mixed flock free-ranges together, make sure plain waterers are placed in multiple spots so younger birds are never crowded out by adults.

In short: Summer Wellness can safely be part of a mixed flock routine — just scale strength and timing based on the chicks’ age, and always provide plain water alongside.

Are These Blends Safe For Roosters, Layers, And Mixed Flocks? What About Ducks, Geese, or Turkeys?

Yes — the Summer Wellness Blends are gentle and suitable for roosters, laying hens, and mixed backyard flocks. They can also be offered to other poultry such as ducks, geese, and turkeys.

Dilution: Use the standard preparation (1 tea bag per 1 gallon waterer).

Plain Water: Always provide a second waterer with plain, fresh water so birds can choose.

Species Differences: Monitor intake, as different species and ages may drink in different amounts.

The blends are meant to complement good husbandry — shade, airflow, and clean water — while encouraging steady hydration and providing light seasonal comfort for all members of the flock.

Can I Mix These With Electrolytes, Apple Cider Vinegar, Or Other Additives?

We recommend serving our herbal teas on their own in one waterer, with plain fresh water always available alongside. This keeps flavors simple and ensures your flock drinks enough.

If you’d like to offer apple cider vinegar or electrolytes, provide them in a separate waterer and only as needed. Many keepers use electrolytes short-term during transport, illness, or extreme heat, and ACV occasionally as part of their routine. Always follow product directions or your veterinarian’s guidance for those supplements.

🥣 Mash Option: If you prefer to keep your water plain or are already adding other supplements, you can pour cooled tea over feed to create a soft mash instead. This delivers the herbs directly through food, and works especially well for flocks that are hesitant about flavored water.
